Street names embedded on sidewalks in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Ceramic tiles and brass plates with embossed lettering of the street names are embedded in the sidewalks in New Orleans, LA.

The old Encaustic cement tiles were placed on sidewalks from the 1870s to about 1920 and still can be found on many sidewalks today. However, the replacement tiles used today are generally painted ceramic rather than encaustic that have a different look.

Tiles in the French Quarter bear the old Spanish colonial street names that were by the Government of Spain to the city of New Orleans as a gift in 1959.

Some other tile designs can occasionally be spotted that were either placed by organizations or individuals in the neighborhood.
