Authorities are searching for three men accused of beating 24-year-old Gavin Melchor to death outside a gas station near NRG Stadium on March 2.
Surveillance footage released Tuesday shows Melchor speaking with one of the suspects at the Valero gas station on Main Street near Westridge around 1 a.m. Moments later, the suspect lunges at Melchor, knocking him into an SUV before he falls to the ground.
As Melchor lies motionless, the attacker rummages through his pockets while another man kicks him in the head.
“They’re all a bunch of cowards to me,” said his father, Chris Melchor.
According to Chris, his son had just left the Rodeo and stopped at the gas station to withdraw money from the ATM. Disturbingly, surveillance video shows bystanders watching the attack without intervening.
“All those people attacking my son and just looking on. I felt helpless as a dad,” he said.
Other family members, including Gavin’s older sister, Christa Melchor, have struggled to process what happened.
“I haven’t brought myself to watch it yet,” she said.
