A 34-year-old man has been arrested for a fatal shooting that left one person dead and another injured in Orange County during the summer of 2024, according to police.
Detectives apprehended Qaadir J. Smith of Newburgh on Thursday, March 20, in connection with a June 2024 homicide on Monument Street, the City of Newburgh Police Department announced on Monday, March 24.
The shooting occurred on June 6, 2024, near 7 Monument St., police reported.
On the day of the shooting, a 26-year-old Newburgh resident was killed by a gunshot wound, and a second victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Qaadir J. Smith faces charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is being held pending arraignment in City Court, according to the police.
The arrest followed an “intensive response” by the department’s Detective Division. The US Marshals Service, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, and the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center also assisted in the investigation.
