METROPOLIS, IL – Miltons Hot Dogs is a sidewalk-served, carryout-only eatery located on Market Street across from the Courthouse and the giant Superman statue in beautiful downtown Metropolis, IL.

I went there today and ordered two chili dogs measuring 6×3 inches that happened to be some of the best chili dogs I have ever had. The high quality chili, cheese and onions in concert with Nathan’s hot dogs was a recipe for perfection. The end result was a gourmet hot dog like no other. The staff was very kind and had our dogs neatly packaged and ready to go in no time.
The Name MILTON
The hot dog eatery was named after Milton, an Attorney that had an office in this building for years. He retired two years ago at 91. He’s now 93 still living in town. His dad worked as an attorney in this same building as well.
The construction of the building began in 1905 and was finished in 1908. It’s all brick and oak timber. The building is like a classic car, it’s gotten better with age.
THE HOT DOG IDEA
The 3-story building was originally built for office space with each floor having a whopping 3200 square feet. Joshua Reagor, real estate agent and owner of the building, explained that:
”It’s just hard to rent office space. So I told my wife: ya know what…we are going to make this work. I said you figure out a business that you want and she came up with this. She designed all this. And of course because I am in real estate I know a lot of sign people. We mainly did it for our girls to work and maybe make a couple part time jobs for someone else.”

EATERY UPDATE FOR METROPOLIS
This is the second locally owned eatery to open on Market Street this year, the other being 718 BrewCafe that opened in March. 718 Cafe is a highly endorsed casual eatery that offers alcohol to boot.
And just a few blocks down on Ferry Street is the highly anticipated Cordavino’s Italian Restaurant slated to open soon along with the donut shop on E. 5th Street.
