YBOR CITY, FL – Roland M. Manteiga was memorialized with this bronze sculpture of himreading the weekly edition of the La Gaceta, his family owned newspaper in Tampa, FL.

Roland was well connected, and his column,  ‘As We Heard It’, became the local mid-20th century version of today’s political blogs, often breaking stories and predicting events before the area’s ‘major’ newspapers.

The newspaper continues to be the only one the United States that is printed in three different languages: English, Spanish and Italian.

Roland’s father, Victoriano Manteiga, started the newspaper in 1922, and later Roland took over as editor and publisher. Roland’s son Patrick currently runs the paper  and  took over his father’s  column ‘As We Heard It.’
